Privacy policy

This policy covers playembers.com — this website and the early-access list. It explains what we collect here, why, where it goes, and how to get it back or deleted.

Who we are

TODO_LEGAL_ENTITY (ABN TODO_ABN) operates Embers, an interactive fiction product for adults. In this policy, "we" and "us" mean TODO_LEGAL_ENTITY.

We handle personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles. Where the Act would not strictly require us to, we apply the same standard anyway.

What this policy does not cover

The Embers application, when it opens at app.playembers.com, will collect a different and more sensitive set of information — including what you write in a story and the consent settings you choose. That is governed by a separate policy published in the application before you can use it. Nothing on this website collects any of it.

What we collect here

• Your email address, if you join the early-access list. That is the only personal information we ask you for on this website.
• Which page you joined from — whether you arrived on one landing page or another. We use it to understand which writing works, not to build a profile of you.
• Ordinary technical information that any web server receives, such as your IP address, browser type and the pages you requested, held in short-lived logs for security and to keep the site working.

We do not use advertising or tracking cookies on this website. We do not sell personal information, and we never will. There is no login, no profile and no account on this site.

Sensitive information

Under the Privacy Act, information about a person's sexual orientation or practices is sensitive information and attracts stronger protection. We do not collect any on this website — but we recognise that being on a list for a product like this can itself suggest something private. So we treat the list accordingly: it is not shared, not sold, not enriched with data from anywhere else, and not used for anything except sending you what you asked for.

Why we collect it, and what we do with it

• To send you an invitation when early access opens.
• To send you occasional updates about Embers, if you consented to that when you joined.
• To measure, in aggregate, which pages and which writing bring people in.
• To keep the site secure and working.

We will not use your address for any other purpose without asking you first.

Marketing emails and unsubscribing

We only email you if you asked us to. Every email we send identifies us and carries a working unsubscribe link, as required by the Spam Act 2003 (Cth). Unsubscribing takes effect immediately and costs you nothing. You can also write to privacy@playembers.com and we will remove you.

Who we share it with

We share personal information only with the service providers we need to run the site and send the emails you asked for. They are permitted to use it only to provide that service to us.

• Supabase — Database hosting for the waitlist. Located in Singapore (ap-southeast-1).
• Vercel — Website hosting and content delivery. Located in United States, with edge servers worldwide.
• TODO_EMAIL_PROVIDER — Sending the emails you have asked for. Located in TODO_EMAIL_PROVIDER_REGION.

Overseas disclosure

Some of those providers are located outside Australia, as listed above. That means your email address is likely to be stored or processed overseas. Before disclosing personal information to an overseas recipient we take reasonable steps to ensure it is handled consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles, including through the contract terms we hold with each provider.

How we keep it, and for how long

The list is held in an access-controlled database and is reachable only by the small number of people who need it. Access is authenticated and logged.

We keep your address until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it, or until it is clear we are not going to launch — whichever comes first. When we no longer need it we delete it. If you unsubscribe, we keep the minimum record needed to make sure we do not email you again.

Data breaches

If a data breach occurs that is likely to result in serious harm, we will notify you and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner as required by the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme.

Getting access, correcting, or deleting

You can ask us what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email privacy@playembers.com or write to TODO_POSTAL_ADDRESS. We will respond within 30 days. There is no charge. We may need to confirm the request came from the address in question before we act on it.

Complaints

If you think we have mishandled your personal information, tell us at privacy@playembers.com. We will acknowledge your complaint within 5 business days and give you a written response within 30 days.

If you are not satisfied with our response, you can take the complaint to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner: oaic.gov.au, or 1300 363 992.

Children

Embers is for adults. This site is not directed at anyone under 18 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has given us their details, tell us and we will delete them.

Changes

If we change this policy we will update the date at the top. If the change materially affects how we handle information you have already given us, we will email you about it rather than relying on you noticing.
